고성은 옛 지명 칠성이 의미하듯이 단단한 성곽으로 둘러싸인 요새와 같이 견고하고 안락한 지역으로 자연적으로 형성된 수태산, 금정산, 거류산, 백방산, 봉화산 등에 에워싸여 있고, 남쪽으로 개방된 바다는 리아스식 해안의 특징을 지니고 있다. 특히 사이트가 접한 당항포는 창포와 내산 사이의 좁은 해안 안에 위치하여 외부와 차단되어 있고, 당항만은 남서쪽으로 깊이 만입한 내만의 안 쪽 중앙에 위치해 있으며, 남해안 일대의 크고 작은 섬들이 산재하여 외양이 파도를 막아주므로, 평균 파고 또한 0.5M이하로 잔잔하고 수심이 깊어 예로부터 소소강이라 불릴만큼 호수같이 잔잔한 바다로 유명하다. 사이트는 서쪽으로 당항포 국민관광단지, 북쪽으로는 금봉산 줄기에 위치한 노벨CC, 남쪽으로는 당항포 바다와 인접하고 있다. 클라이언트는 경상남도 요트협회 회장으로서 자신이 소유하고 있는 요트를 활용하여, 당항포에 마리나관련시설을 계획하여, 해양스포츠 발전에 기여하고자 이번 프로젝트를 시작하게 되었다.

메리 모나크 마리나 프로젝트의 1단계인 커피숍은 마리나 수상 계류장과 바로 연결되는 편의시설이다. 커피숍이 들어설 위치에는 크고 오래된 소나무 두 그루가 설계의 핵심이자 문제이기도 했다. 설계 시작전에 소나무 위치를 측량하여 진행하였지만, 착공을 하면서 기초와 소나무뿌리가 만나는 부분이 문제가 되면서 한차례 설계변경이 이루어 졌다. 최초설계는 2층 건물이었지만, 소나무 뿌리로 인하여 1,2층 사이에 중층이 생기고, 모든 바닥레벨의 기준이 소나무 뿌리가 되었고, 두 그루의 소나무가 건물의 안쪽에 위치하여 건축과 자연이 자연스럽게 만날 수 있게 하였다.

Goseong-gun is surrounded by naturally formed mountains to the north, and borders the sea to the south. Geologically, South Korea's southern coast has features of the ria coast. In particular, Danghangpo, which is adjacent to the site, is located in a narrow coastal area and is blocked from outside. As nearby islands block the waves, the average wave height is less than 0.5m and is famous for the calm sea like a lake. The site is adjacent to Danghangpo National Tourist Complex to the west, Nobel Country Club to the north and Danghangpo Sea to the south. As the chairman of the Gyeongsangnam-do Yacht Association, the client started the project to contribute to the development of marine sports by planning a marina facility in Danghangpo utilizing his yachts.

Phase 1 of the Mary Monarch Marina project, the coffee shop is an amenity with direct access to the marina's floating moorings. Two large, old pine trees in the location of the coffee shop were both a key design feature and a challenge. The location of the trees was surveyed prior to the start of the design, but once construction began, the intersection of the foundation and the roots of the trees became an issue, leading to several design changes. The original design was for a two-story building, but the pine roots created an intermediate floor between the first and second floors, and the pine roots became the reference for all floor levels, and two pine trees were located in the interior of the building, allowing architecture and nature to meet naturally.
