사이트는 경남 고성군 회화면 봉동리, 당항포 바다가 바라보이는 언덕에 자리잡고 있다. 서쪽으로 당항포 국민관광단지, 북쪽으로는 금봉산 줄기에 위치한 노벨CC, 남쪽으로 메리모나크 마리나클럽과 해안가에 마리나 계류장이 위치하고 있다. 클라이언트는 인근 도시 출신으로 서울에 거주하며 중소기업을 운영하는 사업가로서 바다를 좋아해서 고향과 가까운 곳에 회사 직원들을 위한 숙소 겸 가족 들의 휴식공간으로 사용할 부지를 물색하던 중 사이트 근처에 위치한 메리모나크 마리나클럽과 주변환경에 매료되어, 설계한 건축가를 찾아 연락을 한 것이다. 그렇게 이 프로젝트를 시작하게 되었다. 사이트는 메리모나크 마리나 클럽의 타운하우스 분양을 위한 필지 중 하나로서 단지의 북서쪽 끝자락의 경사지형에 위치하고 있다.

 

최초의 계획안은 대지의 형상과 같은 직사각형의 매스를 경사지형을 이용하여 테라스 하우스처럼 레이어를 중쳡시켜 쌓는 방식으로 계획하여 건축주에게 제안하였다. 가장 대지에 순응하는 방식이었고, 햇빛과 전망, 주변 자연이 좋아서 테라스와 발코니 같은 건물의 내부와 외부를 연결해 주는 중간적 성격의 매개공간을 최대한 많이 만들려고 노력하였다. 하지만 풍수를 중요시 여기는 클라이언트에게는 건물의 향이 서향인 것이 문제가 되었다.  아직도 클라이언트 중에 풍수를 중요시 하는 분들이 많이 있다. 풍수를 고려하여 집의 방향과 문의 방향, 침대의 방향까지 계획하기도 한다. 물론 기능적으로도 서향보다는 동향이나 남향집이 쾌적한 것이 사실이다. 여름날 오후 서쪽에서 길게 침투해서 들어오는 서향빛을 좋아하는 사람은 아마도 많지 않을 것이다.

 

첫 번째 수정안은 각 층의 각도를 조금씩 틀어서 최대한 남향에 가깝게 건물을 회전하는 안으로서, 대지의 형상과 풍수를 동시에 만족시키는 안이었지만, 한쪽으로 치우쳐진 형태와 비틀어진 비정형 평면에 대한 시각적인 불편함 때문에 건축주의 동의를 이끌어내기는 어려웠다.

 

고민 끝에 어느 하나의 방향에도 구속받지 않는 곡선을 도입하였고, 정남향을 중심으로 한 원호가 남동쪽에서 남서쪽까지 그려졌다. 이 곡선 파사드는 서향으로부터 건축을 자유롭게 함과 동시에 자연스럽게 태양의 궤적을 따라가며 풍부한 남쪽의 자연채광을 받아들일 수 있게 디자인되었다. 우연하게도 원호의 중심이 메리모나크 마리나 해상 계류장쪽으로 향하게 되어 기존의 안보다 전망도 훨씬 좋아져서 건축주는 만족해 하였다. 완공 후 얼마 지나지 않아 사이트 바로 앞 부지의 공사가 시작되었고, 1층 높이까지 도로쪽(서남방향) 전망이 가려지는 상황이 발생하였다. 결과적으로 정남향을 중심으로 한 곡선 형태의 파사드로 인하여 인접 건물로부터의 조망권 피해를 최소화할 수 있었다.

외장재는 메리모나크 마리나 클럽의 재료와 같은 노출콘크리트를 선택하여 같은 단지 내 건축물로서의 통일성을 고려하였다. 테라스와 함께 처마를 설치하여 아름다운 당항포 앞바다의 풍경들이 곡선의 처마속으로 들어올 수 있게 하였고, 여름에는 처마가 직사광선을 차단하고 그늘을 만들어 시원하게 하고, 겨울에는 낮은 고도의 햇볕이 넓은 창을 통해서 실내 깊이 유입되게 하였다. 

The site is located on a hill overlooking the Danghangpo Sea in Bongdong-ri, Hoehwa-si, Goseong-gun, Gyeongnam. It is bordered by Danghangpo National Tourist Complex to the west, Nobel CC at the base of Geumbongsan Mountain to the north, and Merry Monarch Marina Club and marina moorings on the waterfront to the south. The client is an entrepreneur from a neighboring city who lives in Seoul and runs a small business and loves the sea, so when he was looking for a site close to his hometown to house his company's employees and provide a place for his family to relax, he was attracted to the Merry Monarch Marina Club and its surroundings, and contacted the architect who designed it. That's how the project began. The site is one of the parcels for townhouse sales at Mary Monarch Marina Club and is located on a sloping terrain at the northwest end of the complex.
 
The initial plan was presented to the owner with a rectangular massing that followed the shape of the site, utilizing the slope to build up in layers like a terrace house. It was the most respectful approach to the site, and we tried to create as many intermediary spaces as possible, such as terraces and balconies, to connect the interior and exterior of the building with sunlight, views, and the surrounding nature. However, the building faces west, which was a problem for the feng shui-minded client. We still have a lot of clients who take feng shui seriously. They plan the orientation of the house, the direction of the doors, and even the direction of the bed. Of course, functionally, a house facing east or south is more comfortable than a house facing west. There are probably not many people who enjoy the long, penetrating light from the west on a summer afternoon.
 
The first revision was to rotate the building as close to the south as possible by slightly changing the angle of each floor, which satisfied the geometry of the site and feng shui at the same time, but it was difficult to get the owner to agree due to the visual discomfort of the lopsided form and the twisted, atypical plan.
 
After much deliberation, a curve that is not bound to any one direction was introduced, and an arc centered on the north-south orientation was drawn from the southeast to the southwest. This curved façade was designed to free the building from westward orientation, while also allowing it to naturally follow the sun's trajectory and take advantage of the abundance of natural light from the south. Coincidentally, the center of the arc was oriented towards the Merry Monarch Marina marina moorings, which gave the owner a much better view than the original plan. Shortly after completion, construction began on the site directly in front of the building, which obstructed the street-level (west-southwest) views up to the first floor level. As a result, the curved façade with a north-south orientation minimized the loss of views from adjacent properties.

The exterior material is exposed concrete, the same material as that of the Merry Monarch Marina Club, to create a unified building within the same complex. The eaves were installed alongside the terraces to allow the beautiful views of the Tanghangpo harbor to flow into the curved eaves, and in the summer, the eaves block direct sunlight and provide shade to keep the interior cool, while in the winter, the low-altitude sunlight enters the interior through large windows.
